Bendel Insurance assistant coach Jolomi Atune has explained that returning Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie missed the club’s 2026/27 NPFL season opener against Warri Wolves because his transfer paperwork had not yet been completed.
Obasogie, part of Nigeria’s bronze medal-winning squad at AFCON 2025 in Morocco, signed for Tanzanian side Singida Black Stars before returning to his former club Bendel Insurance ahead of the new season.
An Early Error Raised Questions
Warri Wolves capitalised on a goalkeeping mistake just four minutes into the match, with Towo Eventus opening the scoring against his former club. The early error prompted questions over why Obasogie had not started such a crucial fixture. Speaking at the post-match press conference in place of head coach Kennedy Boboye, Atune explained that Obasogie was still with the squad but that time was needed to complete his paperwork and transfer formalities, given that he was arriving from a club outside Nigeria.

Atune also acknowledged that Bendel Insurance remain a work in progress, saying it will take time for the club’s new signings to fully blend with the rest of the squad. He said he stayed positive even after conceding so early, adding that he trusted the players to fight back, and expressed confidence that the team would continue to improve as the season progresses.
