Arthur Okonkwo was in goal as Wrexham beat Premier League side Manchester United 1-0 in a pre-season friendly in Helsinki, Finland, extending his run of clean sheets in pre-season to two matches in a row.
The 24 year old had also kept a clean sheet in Wrexham’s opening pre-season fixture, a goalless draw with Wisla Krakow the previous Saturday. Against United, the only goal of the afternoon came six minutes before half time, when Sam Smith finished from close range after Lewis O’Brien burst down the left and drilled a low cross into the six-yard box, with United’s defence failing to pick up the striker’s run.
Okonkwo faced a strong United starting XI that included summer signing Andrey Santos, making his debut in midfield alongside Mason Mount, Bryan Mbeumo, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, and Leny Yoro. He was replaced before the start of the second half.
United boss Michael Carrick made wholesale changes at the interval, giving several academy players valuable minutes. Ethan Wheatley came closest to an equaliser for United, but his effort was well saved by Danny Ward as Wrexham held on. United looked short of sharpness for long spells, with senior players including Bruno Fernandes, Youri Tielemans, and Benjamin Sesko unavailable following the World Cup or through injury.
Okonkwo switched international allegiance to Nigeria after previously representing England at Under-16, Under-17, and Under-18 level, and earned his first Super Eagles call-up for the 2026 Unity Cup. He made his debut in Nigeria’s semi final win over Zimbabwe and started in goal as the Super Eagles beat Jamaica 3-0 in the final of the four nation tournament in London.
Wrexham’s next pre-season fixture is against Leeds United the following Saturday.
