Nathan Jones didn’t need convincing about Arthur Okonkwo’s quality — the goalkeeper had already beaten him twice while playing for Wrexham last season.

Charlton Athletic head coach Nathan Jones has praised Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo as an excellent shot stopper following his season-long loan move to the club from fellow Championship side Wrexham.
Okonkwo becomes Charlton’s eighth signing of the summer, joining a rebuild that has already brought in Ivan Mesik, Billy Koumetio, Karlan Grant, Danny McNamara, Millenic Alli, Nathaniel Chalobah and Timothy Ouma.
“He Made Two World Class Saves Against Us”
Speaking on Charlton’s official website, Jones said he already knew exactly how good a goalkeeper Okonkwo was, recalling two standout saves the Nigerian made against his side across last season’s meetings between the two clubs. He praised Okonkwo’s shot-stopping ability, pedigree and experience, and said the player’s clear desire to join Charlton after their first meeting was an important factor in getting the deal done.
Charlton managing director James Rodwell echoed that sentiment, describing Okonkwo as an outstanding goalkeeper with proven ability and framing the signing as a reflection of the calibre of player the club is attracting in its second season back in the Championship.
From Arsenal’s Academy To Wrexham’s Rise
Okonkwo came through Arsenal’s academy, signing his first senior contract there in 2021, before loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian side Sturm Graz, where he won the Austrian Cup. He joined Wrexham permanently in June 2024 after a loan spell that helped the club win promotion to League One, and went on to be a key figure as Wrexham secured back to back promotions, finishing second in the Championship in 2024/25 before narrowly missing the play-offs last season.
An Emerging Super Eagles Option
Okonkwo has two caps for Nigeria, making his debut during the Super Eagles’ Unity Cup triumph at The Valley earlier this year, adding him to an increasingly competitive pool of Nigerian goalkeepers alongside the likes of Maduka Okoye and Stanley Nwabali.
