Nigerian teenager Zadok Yohanna made his competitive debut for Brighton & Hove Albion in a goalless draw against Tromso in the first leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League play off at the Romssa Arena on Thursday night.

The 19 year old was introduced in the 87th minute, replacing Ferdi Kadioglu. Brighton dominated the match, registering 25 shots with six on target, but could not find a way past a resolute Tromso defence.

An Expensive, Hard-Fought Signing

Yohanna joined Brighton this summer from Swedish club AIK Stockholm in a deal worth around £21.5 million, one of the most expensive exports in Swedish football history. Brighton beat off competition from Newcastle United, Chelsea, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham and Real Madrid to land the teenager, with his representatives confirming he turned down bigger financial offers, including interest from Saudi Arabia, specifically to join Brighton because of the club’s reputation for developing young talent.

From Kaduna To The Premier League

Yohanna’s rise has been rapid. He began his career at Ikon Allah Football Academy in Abuja after being scouted in Kaduna State in 2024, before a move to AIK Stockholm in 2025 turned into a breakout season that put Europe’s biggest clubs on alert. He scored five goals and provided four assists in 18 appearances for AIK before completing his Brighton move in June.

Chasing A Home Debut

Yohanna will now hope to make his home debut when Brighton host Tromso in the second leg at the Amex Stadium next Thursday, with a place in the league phase of the 2026/27 UEFA Europa Conference League on the line for the winner on aggregate.
