Tolu Arokodare’s fine start to life at Ajax shows no sign of slowing down. The Nigeria international found the net again on Saturday, but it counted for little as his side went down 3-1 at home to leaders in waiting PSV Eindhoven.
Arokodare Extends Scoring Run
The forward has now scored in four straight matches and has found the net in consecutive Eredivisie games since arriving at Ajax on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Saturday’s goal took his tally in all competitions this season to five.
PSV struck first in the fifth minute, Ricardo Pepi heading home after Ruben van Bommel flicked on a deep Ivan Perišić cross. Arokodare answered on 23 minutes, driving a low right-footed shot from the edge of the box that squeezed into the far corner to level things up.
The visitors were back in front a minute into first-half stoppage time when Lutsharel Geertruida volleyed home, and they put the result beyond doubt deep into the second half. Esmir Bajraktarević finished off a swift counter attack in the 92nd minute, teed up by Sven Mijnans, to seal a 3-1 win for PSV.
The result sends PSV to the top of the Eredivisie table on 13 points from five games, while Ajax sit fifth with seven points from four matches.
Eyes On A Super Eagles Recall
Beyond the result, Arokodare’s form is doing his international prospects no harm. After a tough spell at Wolves that coincided with the club’s relegation, he has rediscovered his scoring touch since moving to the Netherlands.
The 25-year-old earned his first Super Eagles call up in March 2025 and made his debut later that month in a 2-0 away win over Rwanda. He opened his international scoring account in June 2025 with a goal in a 1-1 friendly draw against Russia, and his most recent Nigeria appearance came in the November 2025 CAF play off final defeat to DR Congo that ended the country’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup.
Competition for a striking berth in Eric Chelle’s squad remains stiff, but sustained goals and performances at a club of Ajax’s stature give Arokodare a strong case for a recall, with 2027 AFCON qualifiers on the horizon.
