Millwall head coach Alex Neil has given an update on Nigeria winger Femi Azeez after he was substituted just 30 minutes into the club’s 2-0 win away at Bristol City.

Azeez made way for Kyrell Lisbie inside the opening half hour at Ashton Gate. Millwall went on to win comfortably, with Josh Coburn scoring both goals and Bristol City reduced to ten men after Adam Randell was shown a second yellow card.

“He Says He Felt Something In His Hamstring”

Speaking to NewsAtDen after the match, Neil said he was not entirely certain of the extent of the issue, but that Azeez had described feeling something in his hamstring. The manager said he hoped it would not prove significant, though he was cautious not to make firm promises, noting several other players in a similar position were currently receiving treatment. He praised Lisbie’s performance in Azeez’s absence, saying the team not missing their usual talisman spoke to the quality of both the stand-in and the wider squad display.

A Timing That Adds Extra Weight

The knock comes at a sensitive moment for Millwall and Azeez. The 25 year old has been the subject of heavy transfer interest this summer, with newly promoted Premier League side Hull City leading the chase, though Millwall are reportedly demanding a fee in the region of £30 million to sanction any sale. A significant hamstring injury at this point in the window would complicate matters for all parties, making the club’s caution over the diagnosis understandable.

Azeez was one of the Championship’s standout performers last season, scoring 11 goals and providing eight assists in 37 league appearances as Millwall reached the play off semi finals, form that earned him a place in the division’s Team of the Season.

📌 Did You Know?

  1. Azeez was named in the Championship Team of the Season for 2025/26 and also picked up the division’s Player of the Month award for February.
  2. Millwall’s asking price for Azeez has reportedly climbed from an initial £14.5 million rejected bid to closer to £30 million as suitors circle this summer.
  3. Ipswich Town also showed interest in Azeez earlier this year before signing Abdul Fatawu from Leicester City instead.
  4. Bristol City’s Adam Randell was sent off for two bookable offences, meaning the hosts played more than half the match a man down.
  5. Millwall signed Azeez from Reading in 2024 for a fee of around £1 million, a bargain given how sharply his value has since risen.
  6. Hamstring complaints picked up during matches are often precautionary withdrawals, with clubs erring on the side of caution rather than risking a longer-term issue.
  7. Azeez is contracted to Millwall until 2028, giving the club leverage to negotiate rather than sell under pressure, even amid strong transfer interest.
