Rivers United have appealed to football fans in Akwa Ibom State to turn out in large numbers when the club hosts San Pedro of Cote d’Ivoire in the second leg of their CAF Champions League first round tie on Sunday, September 13. The match takes place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, with kick off at 4pm.

The appeal came during a courtesy visit by a Rivers United delegation, led by sole administrator Christopher Green and general manager Okey Kpaloku, to Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports Elder Paul Bassey in Uyo. The club confirmed it will continue using the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium as its base for continental fixtures.
Building On A Solid First-Leg Result
Rivers United secured a valuable 1-1 draw against San Pedro in the first leg in Cote d’Ivoire and will look to finish the job on home soil. To draw a strong crowd, the club announced that 50 replica jerseys will be given away to the first 50 fans who arrive at the stadium on Sunday.

Green said Rivers United are determined to push deep into the competition and help sustain Nigeria’s strong presence in African club football, urging every football lover and stakeholder in the state to come out and back the team. Speaking on why Uyo remains important to the club, he said, “Uyo is our second home,” and thanked the state government for keeping the stadium up to international standards.
Bassey Pledges Backing
Responding, Commissioner Bassey congratulated the club on its first-leg result and urged the players to stay focused, saying the draw in Cote d’Ivoire should give them confidence heading into the return leg. He assured Rivers United that Akwa Ibom fans would answer the call and turn out in force, while encouraging the players and technical crew to stay disciplined and make full use of home advantage.
