Former Rangers goalkeeper Cammy Bell has taken aim at Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez following a costly mistake in Rangers’ 1-0 win over St Mirren, even though the result went in the club’s favour.
A Risky Flick Gone Wrong
Fernandez had won the ball near the halfway line during the second half but attempted an overly ambitious flicked pass to teammate Dujon Sterling. St Mirren’s Nikolas Agrafiotis intercepted it, exposing Rangers’ backline and triggering a dangerous counter attack that Sterling was forced to stop with a tactical foul, picking up a yellow card in the process.
Bell Calls For Better Decisions
Speaking on co-commentary for Rangers TV, Bell was blunt in his assessment, saying, “When you’re a centre half, you need to make better decisions.” He acknowledged Fernandez’s overall quality as a player but insisted that kind of risk taking in his own half cannot continue.
A Clean Sheet Despite The Scare
Fernandez played the full 90 minutes and ended up with a clean sheet, despite the error and an earlier first half tackle on St Mirren’s Ismeal Kabia that went unpunished. Rangers eventually won the match thanks to a 91st minute goal from Bojan Miovski.
Fernandez has previously spoken about his early-season struggles being linked to momentary lapses in concentration, an area he says he continues to work on with manager Derek McInnes.
