Chelsea are in advanced talks over a €40 million deal for Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, an 18-year-old born in Italy to Nigerian parents who is now an Italy international, Complete Sports reports, citing transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
According to Romano, the agreement would see Ahanor join a Premier League club this summer to continue his development, before formally joining Chelsea in June 2027. Ahanor has reportedly already agreed to the move.
A Case That Highlights Italy’s Citizenship Rules
Ahanor’s background reflects the practical effect of Italy’s citizenship laws on children of immigrants. Because Italy does not grant automatic citizenship to children born in the country to foreign parents, Ahanor remained solely eligible to represent Nigeria until his 18th birthday, despite being raised entirely in Italy. Under Italian law, such individuals may apply for citizenship only after turning 18, provided they have lived in the country continuously and legally.
After turning 18 and successfully applying for citizenship, Ahanor received his first call-up to Italy’s Under-21 squad in March 2026. He went on to earn a call up to the senior Italy squad in May 2026, for friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece, meaning he is no longer eligible to switch allegiance to Nigeria under FIFA rules.
A Rapid Rise At Club Level
Ahanor progressed through Genoa’s youth academy before signing for Atalanta in July 2025 for a fee in the region of €16 million plus bonuses, putting pen to paper on the maximum three year contract permitted for a player under 18. He made his senior debut in Serie A soon after and his UEFA Champions League debut in a win over Club Brugge, going on to make 22 appearances for Atalanta in the 2025/26 season.
