Brentford defender Benjamin Fredrick has been named among a group of fast-emerging African players described as “challengers” to watch in the new Premier League season, according to a BBC Sport Africa survey cited.

The 21 year old has just signed a four-year deal and been promoted into Brentford’s first-team squad, a move the survey highlighted as notably rare: a player signed by a Premier League club directly out of Nigerian football, rather than through an intermediary European league.

A Rapid Rise From Kaduna To Brentford

Fredrick’s journey began at Simoiben Football Academy in Kaduna before he joined ABS FC of Ilorin for the 2021/22 season, making his debut in February 2022. He moved to Nasarawa United of Lafia later that year, form that eventually earned him a move to Brentford in August 2023, initially on loan with an option for a full contract. That option has now been fully activated.

He spent the 2025/26 season on loan in Belgium with Dender, where the survey noted he was enjoying a successful spell and was expected to be one of the Super Eagles’ starting centre-backs at AFCON before a knee injury on the eve of the tournament ruled him out.

Part Of A Wider Continental List

The BBC Sport Africa survey, assessing which African players are best placed to shine this season following Mohamed Salah’s departure from Liverpool, was headed by Ghana and Manchester City’s Antoine Semenyo, followed by Egypt’s Omar Marmoush and Cameroon’s Bryan Mbeumo. Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr also featured among the top prospects, while Fredrick was grouped among the “challengers” alongside Tottenham’s Mohammed Kudus, Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye and Newcastle’s Yoane Wissa. Notably, no Nigerian player featured among the survey’s top rated names, with established Super Eagles internationals Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi and Taiwo Awoniyi all left out.

📌 Did You Know?

  1. Fredrick can play both in central defence and at right back, giving him tactical versatility that has helped his rapid rise through the ranks.
  2. He signed his four-year Brentford deal only recently, converting what began as a loan with option arrangement into a full commitment from the club.
  3. Fredrick’s knee injury on the eve of AFCON cost him a place in the Super Eagles’ starting XI at a tournament where he had been expected to feature prominently.
  4. Nasarawa United, one of his former clubs, has developed several players who have gone on to earn moves abroad in recent years.
  5. Direct NPFL to Premier League transfers remain extremely rare, with most Nigerian talents typically passing through other European leagues first.
