Brighton & Hove Albion have reached an agreement with Championship side Millwall for the signing of Nigeria winger Femi Azeez, Complete Sports reports, citing The Athletic.
The deal is worth £12.5 million, with a further €2.5 million potentially payable in add-ons. The transfer could become a club record sale for Millwall, surpassing the £14 million fee the club received from Crystal Palace for Romain Esse last summer. Azeez is expected to sign a four year contract, with the option of a fifth year, once he completes his medical.
A Season That Kept Building
The move caps a remarkable few weeks for Azeez. Hull City had earlier led the chase for his signature, with Millwall demanding a fee in the region of £30 million to sanction any sale, before a hamstring strain briefly sidelined him in August. He has since returned to fitness and was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Season, capping a standout campaign in which he scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in 37 league appearances.
Ready For The Premier League
Azeez will now look to take the next step in his career at Brighton, a club with a strong recent record of developing and improving players before selling them on for significant profit. The Nigeria international’s exact role under Brighton’s coaching staff remains to be seen, but his versatility and end product across the wing last season give the club plenty to work with.
