Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed interim head coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons for the team’s second-round Olympic qualifying ties against Comoros in October, as the Nigeria Football Federation continues its search for a permanent appointment.
An Experienced Hand
Eguavoen, widely known as “Cerezo,” brings considerable international experience to the role, having previously led the Super Eagles to a bronze-medal finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
A Familiar Backroom Team
He will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, current head coach of Nigeria Women’s Football League side Nasarawa Amazons, who has previously worked with Nigeria’s women’s national teams and led the Falconets at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa joins the technical crew as goalkeeper coach, while former Super Falcons defender and coach Ayisat Yusuf, who won 68 caps for Nigeria and featured at four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and three FIFA Women’s World Cups, has been named an assistant coach.
Road To Los Angeles 2028
The 10 time African champions open their Olympic qualifying campaign against Comoros, with both legs of the tie set for the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13. Nigeria received a bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams in the qualifying race, while Comoros advanced after a 30-0 aggregate win over Sudan.
Should the Super Falcons get past Comoros, they would face either DR Congo or Morocco in the third round between February 23 and March 6, 2027, followed by a fourth round against one of Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic or Mali later that year. The final qualifying round is scheduled for late November into early December 2027, with Africa’s two available Olympic slots on the line.
