Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi opened his goalscoring account for Coventry City with a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win away at League One side Plymouth Argyle in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
It was only Awoniyi’s second appearance for the club since his move from Nottingham Forest, following his debut in last week’s 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates. His Nigeria teammate Frank Onyeka was not part of Coventry’s matchday squad for the tie.
A Fast Start From Awoniyi
Awoniyi broke the deadlock inside three minutes, finishing off an assist from Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi. Two minutes later, he turned provider himself, setting up Jack Rudoni to make it 2-0. Plymouth responded with goals from Oliver Irow and Xavier Amaechi to level the score at 2-2, before Ephron Mason Clark restored Coventry’s lead in the 67th minute and Peter Torp completed the scoring from the penalty spot with 12 minutes remaining, sealing a 4-2 win that sends Coventry through to the third round.
A Reported £9m Move
Awoniyi joined Coventry this summer after four seasons at Nottingham Forest, in a deal reportedly worth £9 million. His involvement in both goals against Plymouth offers an encouraging early sign for Frank Lampard’s side as they build towards their first Premier League season in 25 years.
