Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha received birthday tributes from across the game on Friday as he turned 53, with CAF, Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain and Eintracht Frankfurt all posting messages on their official social media accounts, Complete Sports reports.
CAF, where Okocha now serves as an ambassador, called him one of the smoothest players to ever play the game and wished the Nigerian icon a happy birthday. PSG kept its message short and warm, simply celebrating his big day, while Ligue 1’s account played on his famous double-barrelled nickname with a cheeky nod to why he was “named twice.” Eintracht Frankfurt, the club where Okocha’s European career began, called him a club legend and wished him well on his special day.
From Frankfurt To Football’s Biggest Stages
Okocha joined Eintracht Frankfurt in December 1991, where he played alongside Ghanaian international Tony Yeboah and produced one of his most iconic moments, a mazy dribble through the Karlsruher SC penalty area that beat several defenders before he slotted past goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. The goal was later voted Sportschau’s 1993 Goal of the Year by German television viewers.
After Frankfurt’s relegation, Okocha moved to Fenerbahçe for around £1 million, scoring 30 goals in 62 appearances, many from his trademark direct free kicks. In 1998, Paris Saint-Germain paid roughly £14 million to sign him, making him the most expensive African player in the world at the time. He spent four years in Paris, where he also mentored a young Ronaldinho, before joining Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer in 2002. He went on to captain Bolton to the 2004 League Cup final and was voted the best player in the club’s Reebok/Macron Stadium history in a 2017 fan poll.
A Decorated International Career
At international level, Okocha was part of Nigeria’s squad that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and reached the World Cup round of 16 the same year. He was also a key member of the “Dream Team” that won Olympic gold at Atlanta 1996. In 2004, Pelé named him among the top 125 living footballers as part of FIFA’s centenary celebrations.
