Okocha: Bayern Munich Turned Me Down In 1991 Over My Age

Former Super Eagles midfielder Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has revealed that Bayern Munich wanted to sign him back in 1991, but the move never materialised because he was still under 18.

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Okocha said his European journey did not actually begin at Eintracht Frankfurt, as many fans assume, but at third division German side Borussia Neunkirchen, a detour forced by Bayern’s inability to offer him anything more than a verbal agreement.

An Offer Bayern Couldn’t Put On Paper

Okocha explained that Bayern’s interest followed a tournament in Switzerland, where he impressed while playing for their youth side. Under German football rules at the time, a player had to turn 18 before July to be eligible for a professional contract that season. Because Okocha’s birthday fell in August, he missed that cutoff, a technicality that even ruled him out of playing in the promotion play-offs for the third-division club he was with at the time, despite the team winning its regional league.

He said Bayern offered only a verbal agreement, explaining that he would have had to wait nearly a year, training with the professionals and playing for the reserve side in the meantime, without a formal contract. Despite the risk, Okocha said he was willing to accept it given Bayern’s stature as the biggest club in Germany, but asked the club to put the arrangement in writing, worried about what would happen if he got injured with nothing to fall back on far from home. When Bayern could not commit to paper, he turned the offer down.

The Road To Frankfurt

Okocha instead signed with Borussia Neunkirchen to begin the season. By the winter transfer window, Eintracht Frankfurt came in with an offer that worked around the structural issue, a one year amateur contract followed by two years as a professional. He went on to become one of Frankfurt’s most memorable players, producing his famous mazy goal past Oliver Kahn that was later voted Germany’s Goal of the Year.
