Nwakali’s First English Goal Nominated for Barnsley Goal of the Month

Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali’s first goal in English football has been shortlisted for Barnsley’s Goal of the Month award for December 2024. Nwakali scored on his full League One debut during Barnsley’s 2-1 victory against Exeter City at St James Park on December 14.

Playing in a deep lying midfield role, the Arsenal youth product equalised for Barnsley with a brilliant strike early in the second half. He fired a half volley into the bottom corner from the edge of the area after the ball bounced in his path. His goal is one of four nominees for the award, competing against strikes by Davis Keillor-Dunn, Adam Phillips, and Jon Russell.

Nwakali, the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball winner, returned to England last summer, signing a three-year deal with Barnsley after leaving Arsenal five years ago. Though he missed pre-season preparations, he has steadily gained match fitness and earned a manager place Darrell Clarke’s plans, appearing in nine of Barnsley’s last 13 games, including three starts.

Fans can vote for Nwakali’s goal by visiting the club’s official voting link.
