The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has congratulated Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi after he became the joint second most-capped African player in Premier League history. Iwobi reached 328 appearances in Fulham’s 1-0 win at Coventry City on Saturday, matching Egypt’s Mohamed Salah.
NFF Acting General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme praised the 30-year-old and said he hopes Iwobi will soon become the African with the most Premier League appearances. “We wish him even greater glory,” Ikpeme said. Fans following Nigerian players in England can check Bet9ja’s Premier League betting hub.
Only former Ivory Coast defender Kolo Toure, with 353 appearances, is ahead of Iwobi and Salah on the all-time list for African players. That leaves Iwobi 25 appearances short of the record.
Iwobi played 73 minutes at the Coventry Building Society Arena, finishing with 60 touches, 51 completed passes and an 86.3 per cent passing accuracy, before he was replaced by Cesar Palacios. Oscar Bobb scored the only goal in the 80th minute.
Calvin Bassey also started for Fulham and helped keep a clean sheet, while Coventry’s Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi both came on as second-half substitutes. Readers new to betting can see Bet9ja promotion code in a few words.
Iwobi’s 328 Premier League appearances include more than 100 each for Arsenal, Everton and Fulham, which makes him one of only five players in the competition’s history to reach that mark with three clubs.
He is already Nigeria’s leading Premier League appearance maker, ahead of Shola Ameobi on 298.
He can move clear of Salah into outright second place when Fulham travel to Aston Villa on Saturday, October 31, provided he features. New Bet9ja users can claim Bet9ja’s YOHAIG sign-up package.
Iwobi earned his 100th Nigeria cap in a friendly against Portugal this summer in Leiria, and he has won one silver and two bronze medals at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Salah has played 26,785 Premier League minutes against Iwobi’s 22,898, so Iwobi has reached the same appearance count with fewer minutes.
