Speaking to Completesports.com, Ayeni credited his squad’s defensive discipline and winning mentality for the flying start, which includes a notable win over nine time champions Enyimba. He said it is too early to judge any team in the league, but insisted the real target is to compete well, sit near the top, and leave a lasting impression on Nigerian football and its stakeholders, adding that a title challenge would be a welcome bonus if it comes.
A Personal Angle To The Enyimba Win
Ayeni spoke about the added significance of the win over Enyimba, a club he previously coached before joining Doma United. He said he prepared the players by stressing that overcoming a club of Enyimba’s stature, given their pedigree in African and Nigerian football, would be a statement result, and he was pleased with how the team responded under that pressure.
Taking It One Game At A Time
Looking ahead to the trip to face Kano Pillars, Ayeni acknowledged the size of the challenge, describing the Sai Masu Gida as a household name with a big pedigree in Nigerian football. Even so, he said, “It’s a game of 90 minutes and 11 players,” and expressed confidence that Doma United can get a positive result, while stressing the need for the squad to stay humble and focused as the season progresses.
