Paul Onuachu in action for Trabzonspor

Paul Onuachu found his scoring touch again on Sunday, netting twice in Trabzonspor’s emphatic 5-0 home win over Genclerbirligi in the Turkish Super Lig. The Super Eagles striker had gone five matches without a goal in all competitions heading into the fixture.

Onuachu Breaks His Drought

Onuachu opened the scoring in the fifth minute, rising to head home a cross from Aral ÅžimÅŸir. He doubled his tally in the 22nd minute with a close-range finish from another cross, making it 3-0 at the time. However, his afternoon ended prematurely when he was substituted in the 44th minute after picking up an injury.

Fellow Nigerian Chibuike Nwaiwu also featured, starting the match before being replaced with seven minutes remaining. Former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah added to the rout with a first-half penalty and a second half assist, while Franculino Dju completed the scoring late on.

Injury Concern Ahead Of AFCON Qualifiers

Onuachu’s injury comes at an awkward time for the Super Eagles, who are about to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Nigeria face Madagascar on September 23 before travelling to Guinea-Bissau on September 27.

The news adds to a growing injury list for the national team’s attack, with Victor Osimhen also having recently picked up a groin problem during Galatasaray’s 3-2 win over Istanbul Basaksehir, an issue expected to keep him out for a few weeks.
