Edo Queens are champions of West Africa once again. Kennedy Boboye’s side needed a penalty shootout to get past Ampem Darkoa Ladies of Ghana in Sunday’s final, eventually winning 4-1 from the spot after normal time ended 2-2.
It was a final that swung both ways. The Nigerian champions found themselves chasing the game twice, only to dig out an equaliser each time and drag the contest all the way to penalties, where their composure proved decisive.
Ampem Darkoa Strike Early, Edo Queens Respond Fast
Ampem Darkoa could not have asked for a better start. Beline Nyarko put the Ghanaians ahead inside the second minute, sending an early jolt through the stadium.
Edo Queens did not sit with the setback for long. Doosuur Anastasia Atume levelled matters just two minutes later, hauling the Nigerian side back into a final that was already living up to its billing.
The contest stayed level for a long stretch afterward, with both sides probing for an opening. It was Nyarko again who broke the deadlock, striking 16 minutes from time to hand Ampem Darkoa a second lead and push Edo Queens to the brink.
Umejiaku’s Late Strike Forces Penalties
With the WAFU B crown slipping away, Edo Queens threw everything forward in the closing stages. The pressure paid off deep into stoppage time when Oluebube Umejiaku found the net to make it 2-2, sending the final into a shootout and sparking wild celebrations on the Edo Queens bench.
There was no shakiness from the spot for the Nigerian champions. Boboye’s players converted all four of their penalties, while Ampem Darkoa missed twice and could only convert one of their three attempts, handing Edo Queens a 4-1 shootout win and the title.
Continental Ticket and Individual Honours
Beyond the trophy, the win secures Edo Queens a place in the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League, giving the club another shot at continental glory on a bigger stage.
The tournament also delivered individual reward for two of Edo Queens’ standout performers. Winger Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was named WAFU B Player of the Tournament, while Atume, whose equaliser in the final kept Edo Queens’ hopes alive, finished as the competition’s top scorer to claim the Golden Boot.
It caps a strong run for the Benin City based side, who have now added a West African crown to their growing list of achievements in Nigerian women’s football.
