Bayern Munich have confirmed that midfielder Jamal Musiala, who has Nigerian heritage through his father, is fine after appearing to faint during the club’s pre-season friendly against RB Leipzig on Saturday.

Musiala, brought on as a 69th-minute substitute, had just scored to make it 3-1 in the 81st minute when he appeared dazed and struggled to stay on his feet, with temperatures at the venue reaching 33 degrees Celsius. He was caught by teammate Ismael Saibari before medical staff rushed onto the pitch to attend to him. He has since been cleared and could be involved when Bayern open their competitive season this weekend.

Club Confirms He Is Fine

Bayern’s director of sport, Max Eberl, gave a brief update on the 23 year old’s condition afterward, saying simply that Musiala is fine, and that this was the most important thing. Musiala has previously recovered from two fractures earlier in his career, but Saturday’s incident is understood to have been related to the heat rather than a recurrence of any previous injury.

A Nigerian Connection, But A German International

Musiala was born in Stuttgart, Germany, to a Nigerian-British father, Daniel Richard, and a German mother of Polish descent, Carolin. His family lived in Fulda until he was seven, before relocating to England, where he grew up and came through academy football at Chelsea after also playing for local clubs including Fulham, Brentford and Wimbledon as a boy. Though eligible for both Germany and England at youth level, Musiala committed his international career to Germany in February 2021 and has gone on to represent the senior national team, including at a World Cup.

He returned to Germany with his mother in 2019 and joined Bayern Munich shortly after, making his Bundesliga debut in June 2020 at 17 years and 115 days old, at the time the youngest player to feature in the German top flight for the Bavarian giants.
