The 2026 NWFL Nationwide Championship gets underway in Aba, Abia State, with 12 clubs from across Nigeria competing for promotion to the 2027 NWFL Championship.
The competition runs from August 15 to 23, with the participating clubs drawn into four groups of three. Only the top two finishers overall will earn automatic promotion to the NWFL Championship, the second tier of Nigeria’s women’s football pyramid, making every group match significant.

Competitive action begins on Sunday, August 16, with one opening fixture in each group, Solo Wonders Babes host Spunky Blazers FA in Group A, hosts C2E Sports Academy face Bayelsa Princesses in Group B, Onimarg FC take on NAF Queens in Group C, and Plateau United Queens meet Obosa Football Academy in Group D.
A Key Rung On The Ladder
Speaking ahead of the tournament, NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi described the competition as a vital platform for growing women’s football in Nigeria, saying the Nationwide tier gives ambitious grassroots clubs a clear pathway to higher levels of competition. She urged participating clubs to uphold professionalism, discipline and fair play throughout, and thanked the Abia State Government and the Local Organising Committee for their support in hosting the championship.
The NWFL Nationwide sits at the base of a three-tier pyramid introduced when the league restructured in 2016, feeding into the NWFL Championship and, ultimately, the NWFL Premiership itself.
