Nigerian forward Sixtus Ogbuehi earned his first senior matchday call-up for Osasuna as they secured a 2-1 win over Girona in Sunday’s La Liga encounter at El Sadar Stadium. The 22 year old was drafted in to replace Raúl García, who was ruled out with an eye injury sustained in training.
Though Ogbuehi was an unused substitute, it marked a milestone in his career, capping off a steady rise since joining Osasuna Promesas on loan from CD Eldense in January. The deal includes a voluntary purchase option.
So far, Ogbuehi has impressed at the B team level, scoring four goals and providing four assists in twelve Primera Federación matches. Last season, he tallied 18 goals in the Spanish third tier, split between Moralo and Ceuta B.
Osasuna’s goals on the day came from Ante Budimir and Pablo Ibáñez, with Yáser Asprilla grabbing a late consolation for Girona.

There’s something quietly powerful about a first call up especially for a player like Sixtus Ogbuehi, whose journey through Spain’s lower divisions has been one of quiet grit rather than noisy headlines. Making the bench in a La Liga fixture may not generate the same buzz as a debut goal, but for Ogbuehi, it’s the culmination of years of hard work and a sign of trust from the coaching staff.
Osasuna’s decision to bring him in as a late replacement for the injured Raúl García speaks volumes. It shows that when opportunity knocks, preparation matters and Ogbuehi has clearly made an impression in training and with the Promesas squad.
We believe this is the kind of development that should catch the attention of Nigeria’s football authorities. With eight direct goal involvements in 12 games this season, Ogbuehi is proving he has the tools to make the leap. And now that he’s on the cusp of top-flight football, it’s only a matter of time before he makes his full debut.
Nurture this kind of talent. Celebrate this kind of rise. Because today’s unused sub could be tomorrow’s Super Eagle.
