Alozie and Kanu break Comoros

The Super Falcons beat Comoros 2-0 in the first leg of their 2028 Olympic Games qualifier at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Friday. Second-half goals from Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu settled the game. FootballInNigeria.com.ng reports that Comoros held out through a goalless first half.

Alozie opened the scoring in the 48th minute, finishing from close range after a headed assist. Kanu doubled the lead in the 59th minute, heading home a well-floated corner kick.

Comoros were the nominal home team

Comoros were the designated home team in Ikenne because they have no CAF-approved stadium for international games. Both legs are being staged at the Remo Stars Stadium.

The return leg takes place on Tuesday, October 13, at the same ground. The winner over the two legs advances to the third round.

How the sides got here

Nigeria received a bye into the second round, while Comoros thrashed Sudan 30-0 on aggregate in the first round. Comoros won the two legs 17-0 and 13-0.

The Falcons arrived on the back of a disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Complete Sports says a 1-0 defeat to eventual champions Cameroon cost them automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.

They then lost 2-1 to South Africa in the African play-in, which ended their World Cup hopes. It was the first time Nigeria have missed the Women’s World Cup since it began in 1991.

What comes next

Victory over the two legs sends Nigeria to the third round, between February 23 and March 6, 2027, against either Morocco or DR Congo. The qualifying series has five rounds, with the final one set for November 23 to December 4, 2027.
