Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium to Get FIFA-Standard Grass Pitch in Major Renovation
Governor Peter Mbah’s administration has committed almost N10 billion to overhaul the Enugu venue, with the ambition of joining the shortlist of Nigerian stadiums cleared to host international matches.

Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu is undergoing a major facelift as the state government pushes to bring the venue up to the standard required for international football matches, with the installation of a FIFA standard natural grass pitch at the centre of the project.
The renovation, championed by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, is being framed as an effort to put the Enugu venue in the same conversation as Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo and Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, both of which have hosted Super Eagles fixtures in recent times.
At the official groundbreaking, Governor Mbah asked traders operating around the stadium premises to relocate so contractors would have adequate room to work, with all shop owners given until July 20 to vacate the site.
Beyond the pitch itself, the project includes rehabilitation of the athletics track, roofing over the spectator stands, an increase in seating capacity, new floodlighting, a revived digital scoreboard, upgraded safety systems, improved access points, and additional support facilities.
Onyekwelu Nwobodo, senior special assistant on media to the governor, said in a statement that the renovation represents another major investment in sports infrastructure and youth development in Enugu State. He added that the work is also intended to clear the dilapidation the stadium, nicknamed “The Cathedral,” has suffered in recent years.
The Enugu government has set aside close to N10 billion for the project, which is also being timed to prepare the venue to host the 2026 National Sports Festival later this year. The push comes shortly after the Confederation of African Football approved only three Nigerian stadiums to host international matches Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, and MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
