Rangers International FC is expanding into women’s football, with club CEO Amobi Ezeaku confirming that a newly formed women’s team will compete in the upcoming Nigeria Women Football League Premiership season. The move brings the storied Flying Antelopes brand into elite women’s club football for the first time.
Open Trials On The Way
Speaking at a press briefing in Enugu on Wednesday, Ezeaku said the club will soon hold open screenings for players hoping to earn a place in the inaugural squad. He confirmed that coach Favour Anieke will continue to lead the women’s side.
Equal Support Promised
Ezeaku stressed that the women’s team would not be treated as a secondary project, saying, “The female team would enjoy the same level of attention, support, and recognition given to the Rangers men’s team.”
Venue Plans Still Taking Shape
On the matter of a home ground, Ezeaku said the Awka City Stadium in Anambra State remains a viable option for now, though the club’s preference is for the women’s side to share venues with the men’s team whenever possible. Rangers are also working on plans to fully integrate the women’s team into the club’s main operations once ongoing renovations at the historic Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, popularly known as The Cathedral, are complete.
