Broadfoot’s praise
Former Scotland and Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot has described Emmanuel Fernandez as a supreme, all-round athlete. He says the Super Eagles centre-back has become indispensable at Ibrox. FootballInNigeria.com.ng reports that Broadfoot sees keeping him as one of the club’s smartest decisions.
Speaking to the Scotsman, Broadfoot said holding on to Fernandez through recent transfer windows was a big one for Rangers. “He looks like an unbelievable player,” he said.
Broadfoot called him good on the ball, very strong in the air and confident enough to do what he wants in a game. In his view, Fernandez is exactly the type of player clubs look for.
From Peterborough to Ibrox
Fernandez joined Rangers from Peterborough United in July 2025 on a four year deal. The London-born defender came through at Brentford and had spells at Gillingham and Ramsgate before reaching Scotland.
He was named Rangers’ Player of the Season for 2025/26 and was the only Rangers player in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year. He then earned a first Super Eagles call up in March and, according to Foot Africa, scored on his debut.

Scrutiny and the road ahead
Broadfoot’s praise comes after a demanding campaign in which Fernandez has faced some scrutiny. Match reports noted that Russia’s first goal in Tuesday’s 3-3 friendly followed Fernandez losing the ball near the Nigerian box.
Even so, Broadfoot says the player’s ceiling remains very high. His Kilmarnock side face Rangers on Saturday, and he joked that he hopes Fernandez has an off day.

Why it matters for Nigeria
Fernandez gives Eric Chelle a tall, ball playing centre back who can also defend aggressively and score. At nearly 1.98 metres, he adds aerial strength to a defence that has conceded three goals in each of its last two games.
Can he cut out the mistakes while keeping the strengths Broadfoot admires? That may decide his place when the qualifiers resume in November.
