FIFA has approved the appointment of a normalisation committee to oversee the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation until fresh elections into its Executive Committee are held. The Bureau of the FIFA Council took the decision on Thursday, and the NFF disclosed it in a statement.
The decision was communicated in a letter signed by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström and addressed to the NFF’s Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme. Football fans who follow the national teams can read Bet9ja promotion code starter notes.
The committee will have a suitable number of members, to be appointed jointly by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football as soon as possible. The letter did not name any members.
Its mandate will expire as soon as it has completed all its tasks, but no later than May 31, 2027. FIFA added that none of the members will be eligible for the positions to be filled in the upcoming NFF elections under any circumstances.
Until the committee is constituted, the NFF Secretariat will continue to run the federation’s day to day affairs and the administration of football in Nigeria.
The move follows weeks of turmoil at the federation. In August, former NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and other members of the Executive Committee resigned, and the planned elective congress was suspended pending reforms. President Bola Tinubu had directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football, with the National Sports Commission working alongside the NFF and engaging FIFA and CAF. On September 1, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade said FIFA had accepted the resignations after talks in Zurich.
Some reports link the resignations to mounting criticism over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Normalisation committees are meant to be temporary, and FIFA has set a hard deadline. The challenge will be picking credible, independent members quickly, because the Super Eagles, Super Falcons and age grade teams still have fixtures to prepare for, including the Olympic Eagles’ tie with DR Congo on November 13 and 17.
