Samuel Kalu has put pen to paper on a new contract with Bulgarian club Botev Plovdiv, tying his future to the two time Bulgarian champions until 2029.
The move comes despite growing transfer speculation around the winger, with fellow Bulgarian side Levski Sofia and a number of Swiss clubs reported to have been monitoring his situation. Botev Plovdiv moved quickly to head off any departure, securing his signature on a fresh three year deal.
Kalu joined the club last summer following his exit from Championship side Watford, and enjoyed a solid debut campaign, making 26 appearances across all competitions and scoring twice while impressing with his pace and creativity on the flank.
His route to Bulgaria has taken in stops across four different countries. Before Watford, Kalu played for Slovakian side AS Trencin, Belgian club KAA Gent, and French outfit Girondins Bordeaux, giving him a broad base of European experience heading into this new chapter at Botev Plovdiv.
On the international stage, Kalu has made 17 appearances for the Super Eagles, scoring twice, and will be hoping his renewed focus in Bulgaria helps push his case for involvement in Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
