Bayelsa United technical adviser Abdul Maikaba says his players are in peak condition for Sunday’s Nigeria National League (NNL) opener against Abia Comets. The Prosperity Boys closed their preseason with a 4-1 friendly win over Ogunbor United FA of Sapele at Southern Delta University in Ozoro, Delta State.

The 2026/27 NNL campaign starts on Sunday, November 8, at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa. Bayelsa want an immediate return to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), and Maikaba’s squad has spent weeks trying to prove it can deliver.

The coach liked what he saw in front of goal. After the win in Ozoro, he leaned on the goals column to make his point.

“The boys have responded very well. Scoring 35 goals in 10 games shows that we are creating and converting our chances. While we still need to fine tune a few areas, overall, I am very satisfied with our progress.”

Goals Are Flowing, But Context Matters

The contrast with last season is hard to miss. Bayelsa scored 37 goals in 38 NPFL games in 2025/26, an average of fewer than one per match. Maikaba’s side hit 35 in 10 preseason outings.

Friendlies aren’t league football, though. Can a defence that conceded 42 NPFL goals last season hold up when the opposition sets the tempo? Maikaba himself admits a few areas still need fine tuning.

The NNL rewards patience over a long season, and Bayelsa will need more than one good night. Fans who also follow the NPFL’s November 7 and 8 fixtures and like to back their picks can check the YOHAIG promo code before placing a first bet.

A Reset After Relegation

Last season ended badly. Bayelsa finished 19th in the 2025/26 NPFL with 43 points, confirmed down after a 2-1 loss to Remo Stars in Ikenne on Matchday 37. That defeat ended a four-year stay in the top flight.

Governor Douye Diri responded fast. He dissolved the board, the management and the technical crew, and set the target of an NPFL return at the end of 2026/27.

Maikaba was unveiled in Yenagoa on July 16 with that target as his brief. He has managed Wikki Tourists, Plateau United, Akwa United, Enyimba, Rangers and Kano Pillars, and he also holds the Nigeria U20 job. Reports describe him as an attack-minded coach, and the preseason numbers back that up.

Bayelsa’s target isn’t unrealistic. Doma United went straight back up after relegation, and they open their NPFL 2026/27 campaign against fellow NNL graduates Sporting Lagos. Promoted sides can make an instant impact, and new Bet9ja users following them can check the Bet9ja sign-up offer before the next round of games.

Four clubs went up from the NNL last season: Doma United, Inter Lagos, Sporting Lagos and Ranchers Bees. Sporting Lagos also claimed the NNL title for the first time. That is the bar Bayelsa are chasing.

Sunday won’t settle the season, but it will set the tone. Abia Comets won’t care how many goals Bayelsa scored in Ozoro. A win at home would hand Maikaba early points and the early belief a promotion push needs.
