Brighton players in Premier League action

It was a mixed afternoon for the Super Eagles duo of Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka as Brighton thrashed Coventry City 5-0 in Sunday’s Premier League fixture. While the result was emphatic for Brighton, Awoniyi’s afternoon turned sour when he was shown a red card in the 53rd minute.

A Fourth Appearance Ends In Red

Awoniyi was making his fourth appearance for Brighton when he picked up a straight red card for an elbow on Maxim De Cuyper, reducing his side to ten men. Onyeka, meanwhile, played his part before being replaced in the 73rd minute by Yirenkyi.

Brighton Cruise Regardless

Brighton had already taken the lead through Charalampos Kostoulas, who scored his first league goal since January to put the hosts ahead at the break. The floodgates opened further in the second half as Malick Yalcouye doubled the advantage before Awoniyi’s dismissal, and Brighton kept piling on the misery with a Pascal Gross penalty, a thumping 25 yard strike from Lewis Dunk, and a fifth goal from Yasin Ayari to complete a five-star display.

A Statement Win

The result underlines Brighton’s strong early season form and leaves Coventry with plenty to reflect on, while Awoniyi will now face the prospect of a suspension following his red card.
