Smart City FC began their 2026/27 Nigeria National League (NNL) campaign with a dramatic 2-1 win over newly promoted Dokkal Khairu FC at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. A winner in the 92nd minute decided the contest after the visitors had equalised late on.
Dokkal Khairu, from Osun State, were playing their first fixture at this level after earning promotion from the third tier in the summer. They arrived in Lagos with little to lose, and they made life difficult for the hosts for most of the match.
The Osun club’s goalkeeper, Usman Olayinka, was one of the best players on the pitch. He made a series of important saves that kept Smart City at bay and kept his team in the game.
Smart City came out for the second half with fresh attacking intent and kept pushing forward in search of the goal that would settle the game. The pressure told eventually, although the visitors still had plenty to say before the final whistle.
Dokkal Khairu levelled the score in the 85th minute through Ajileye Ademola, and the newly promoted side looked set to leave Lagos with a point.
Smart City had other ideas. In the 92nd minute they found the net again to snatch all three points, sending their supporters into celebration. The report does not name the goalscorers for Smart City.

What The Win Means
For Smart City, the victory is an encouraging way to start the season, especially after they had to respond to a late equaliser. They were named the Best Behaved Team at last season’s NNL awards, and they will want to add results to that reputation this time.
The Lagos club have been placed in Conference B this season. Their group includes Bayelsa United, Akwa United, Beyond Limit FA, Solution FC, Right-2-Win FC, Dokkal Khairu, Abakaliki FC and Ekiti United, so the opening win is a useful start in a competitive group.
It is a strong group for promotion hopefuls. Bayelsa United and Akwa United are both relegated NPFL clubs, and both have said they are targeting an immediate return to the top flight. Readers who follow Lagos football can check this Bet9ja promotion for Lagos football fans as the season gets going.
Dokkal Khairu’s First Test
The visitors will take a lot of heart from the performance. They took part in the South-West 2 promotion play offs in Ado-Ekiti in July and earned a place in the NNL for this season.
Losing to a stoppage time goal is a painful way to begin the season, but it also shows that they can compete at this level. Olayinka’s saves and Ademola’s late goal are good signs for a club that will mostly be fighting to stay up.
The NNL season itself kicked off on November 1, when Heartland and Crown FC drew 2-2 at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.
