A major step back
Rivers United goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena has returned to full training after career threatening surgery earlier this year, the club has confirmed. The Super Eagles goalkeeper’s operation and rehabilitation were fully funded by the Pride of Rivers. FootballInNigeria.com.ng reports that the surgery cost about N14 million.
The club said Ozoemena did not have to worry about any medical bills during his recovery. In a statement on Friday, Rivers United said: “This is part of the club’s wider player first approach.”

Club welfare record
Rivers United publicly highlighted its commitment to player welfare in March 2026 and pointed to Ozoemena’s case as an example. The club says it takes full responsibility for a player’s health and recovery.
The same support earlier helped right back Ebuka Akobundu return to action after 378 days out with an abdominal injury. The club says removing the financial and medical burden has helped lift squad morale and team unity.
The club’s statement does not specify the injury, but Complete Sports compares his return to ACL recoveries, which usually take several months. Fans who follow the NPFL can read the Bet9ja bonus code guide before the weekend.
A boost for the title chase
Rivers United are second in the NPFL and unbeaten, one point behind leaders Rangers International. They visit Abia Warriors in Matchday 8 on Sunday at 4pm.
Having Ozoemena back in full training gives the technical crew another option in goal. Whether he plays soon will depend on how coach Finidi George weighs match fitness.

Who is Ozoemena?
Ozoemena, 25, joined Rivers United from Enyimba in August 2025. He has also played for Kwara United and Delta Force, and he has represented Nigeria.
He is 1.87 metres tall and wears the number 16 shirt. His comeback is a welcome piece of good news for the club.
