Akwa United has blocked the potential invitation of their 17 year old star player, Sani Suleiman, to the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and Benin’s Cheetahs. The decision was influenced by the club’s current involvement in a relegation battle with five matches remaining in the season.
Officials of the Super Eagles had identified Suleiman, a standout player this season with 15 goal involvements 10 goals and 5 assists in 15 appearances, as a replacement for the injured Samuel Chukwueze of AC Milan. Chukwueze, doubtful due to a hamstring injury, later declared himself fit, easing the need for a replacement.
Akwa United expressed concern that releasing Suleiman would negatively impact their crucial matches against Heartland and Sunshine Stars. The young winger has been a key player for Akwa United and was named the best player in the Nigeria Premier Football League for March.
Despite the setback, Super Eagles coach Finidi George will continue to monitor Suleiman’s performances with a view to a future call up.
