NPFL chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye has revealed that the league will unveil a new title sponsor before the start of the 2026/27 season, confirming a three-year deal worth $7.5 million that marks a major financial shift for Nigerian club football.

Elegbeleye made the announcement at the league’s Annual General Meeting in Ibadan on August 7, though he stopped short of naming the incoming sponsor. “We are going to have a title sponsor before the start of the season,” he said. “What this means is that there is going to be more money for the clubs at the end. In the next two weeks, we will call a press conference for the unveiling, and the media will be invited.”

The new arrangement brings an end to Bet9ja’s run as NPFL title sponsor, a partnership that dates back to December 2021, when the betting company signed an agreement with the league’s former managers, the League Management Company, after an initial deal was struck in September of that year.

The sponsorship news arrived as part of a broader financial picture taking shape for the new season. The same AGM confirmed a record 1 billion naira prize for this season’s NPFL champions, part of a wider push by the National Sports Commission to raise standards and revenue across the domestic game.

Elegbeleye framed the new title deal as a direct benefit for clubs, who have long relied on modest central funding compared to the demands of running a competitive top flight side. A $7.5 million sponsorship spread across three years represents a significant injection into a league that has historically struggled to attract sustained commercial investment at this scale.

With the identity of the new sponsor still under wraps, speculation is likely to build over the coming fortnight ahead of the promised press conference. For now, what’s clear is that Nigerian football’s top flight is entering its new season with a considerably different commercial backdrop than the one it has operated under for the past five years.

The 2026/27 NPFL season is scheduled to kick off between August 28 and 30, meaning the new sponsor’s unveiling should land with just enough time to be woven into the league’s opening weekend build up.
