Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare scored twice and provided an assist as Ajax thrashed Danish Superliga leaders FC Midtjylland 6-1 in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday night, November 5. The win at the MCH Arena in Herning was Ajax’s second in a row in the competition.
Arokodare gave the visitors the lead in the ninth minute after an assist from Gloukh. Midtjylland replied in the 28th minute through Etim, and the first half ended 1-1.
The second half was a very different story. Arokodare put Ajax back in front with his second goal, set up by Leonardo Ouazane, and Midtjylland ended up with ten men. Ajax went on to score five goals in the second half, all within a spell of about 30 minutes.
The Nigerian also played a part in the third goal, providing the assist for Owen Wijndal. Substitute Marcos Leonardo made it 6-1 in the 82nd minute after coming on in the 70th, finishing a pass from Gloukh and ending his own long wait for a goal.
UEFA reports that Arokodare’s brace takes his tally in this season’s Conference League to three goals. That puts him level at the top of the scoring chart with Albian Ajeti, Niklas Castro, Cyriel Dessers, Djú Franculino and Noah Holm.
Where Ajax Stand
The result lifts Ajax to 11th in the league phase table, while Midtjylland sit second from bottom with just one point. Fans who follow Nigerian strikers abroad can check the Bet9ja promotion for European weekends before the next round of fixtures.
Ajax have now won four and lost one of their last five Conference League matches, counting the qualifying rounds. They face Swiss side FC Thun at the Johan Cruijff ArenA after the international break.
The performance showed how complete the Amsterdam side looked once they took control. Midtjylland’s sending off changed the game, but Ajax were already ahead and played with real confidence.
Arokodare’s Strong Run Continues
Arokodare has been important for Ajax since the start of the European campaign. He scored and provided an assist in the 4-2 first-leg win at FC Sion on August 20, then scored twice on his first competitive start in the 5-3 second-leg win on August 27, which sent Ajax into the league phase.
The latest display comes days after Jordi Cruyff said the option to buy him from Wolves is already arranged. Before this game he had 10 goals and three assists in 15 appearances, so by our count he now has 12 goals and four assists, and readers who like to follow his progress can read about how Bet9ja booking codes work.
His form also strengthens the case for the Super Eagles. Eric Chelle has yet to name his squad for the Tanzania qualifiers, but a striker scoring at this level is hard to ignore.
For now, the focus is on Ajax’s next game against Thun. If Arokodare keeps this form, Ajax will be well placed to follow through on the option to buy him.
