Brentford right-back Michael Kayode has confirmed that the Nigeria Football Federation approached him over a possible switch of international allegiance, but says he was never tempted to change countries.
Eligible For Both, But Committed To Italy
Born in Borgomanero, Italy, to Nigerian parents, Kayode is eligible to represent both nations at senior level. The 22 year old has represented Italy extensively at youth level and recently earned his first senior call-up to the Azzurri squad, having previously played a key role in Italy’s 2023 UEFA European Under-19 Championship triumph, scoring the winning goal in the final against Portugal.
Kayode Explains His Decision
Speaking to Football Italia, Kayode said the choice to stay with Italy was straightforward given his long history coming through the country’s youth ranks. He said, “Nigeria approached me, but I never thought about changing national teams,” adding that he considers Italy a great national team and sees playing for them as an honour.
