Rivers United have confirmed that head coach Finidi George is currently in Abuja undergoing the CAF A-License Coaching Course, explaining his absence from the technical bench during Wednesday’s league clash with Warri Wolves.
Club Clears Up The Confusion
The Port Harcourt based club took to its official X account to address questions from fans about the former Super Eagles winger’s absence. The club explained that Finidi is among a group of top coaches taking part in the course, describing it as the elite continental coaching programme that has returned to Nigeria after nine years, and reassured supporters that there was nothing to worry about, as the coach simply wants to upgrade his qualifications.
A Long-Awaited Return For Nigeria
Nigeria was only readmitted to the CAF A Coaching Convention earlier in 2026, after CAF approved a curriculum submitted by the NFF, following a gap of roughly nine years since the country last hosted an A-License course. In the interim, the NFF had continued running D-, C- and B-License programmes, including a women-only CAF C-License course in 2025.
The course is widely seen as an important step in developing elite coaching talent in Nigeria, and Finidi’s participation underlines his continued efforts to build on his experience as he leads Rivers United’s project.
