Rivers United picked up a valuable away draw in the first leg of their CAF Champions League first preliminary round tie, battling back from behind to hold hosts San Pedro 1-1 at the Laurent Pokou Stadium on Saturday.
Chances came at both ends in a goalless opening half before San Pedro broke the deadlock 11 minutes into the second period, Issouf Dosso capitalising on space in the Rivers United defence to put the hosts ahead.
Douglas Levels For The Pride Of Rivers
Finidi George’s side responded well to going behind, and substitute Iyowuna Douglas restored parity in the 69th minute with a composed finish from inside the box. Rivers United then held their nerve for the rest of the game to secure a share of the spoils on the road.
Decisive Second Leg Awaits In Uyo
The tie now moves to Nigeria, with the return leg set for the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo next Sunday. Whichever side wins the second leg will progress to the next round of the competition.
Elsewhere, Nigeria’s other representatives in the competition, Rangers International, take on Sobemap FC of Benin Republic at the Moshood Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Sunday.
