Reigning NPFL champions Rangers International will host Katsina United in the opening fixture of the 2026/27 season at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.

Rangers have chosen the Abeokuta venue as a temporary home while renovation work continues at their usual base, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. The Flying Antelopes will also stage their CAF Champions League home matches at the same venue until the Enugu ground is ready again.

Chasing A Rare Opening-Day Win

Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side claimed a record ninth NPFL title last season and will be hoping to start their title defence with a win. Rangers themselves were held to a goalless draw by El-Kanemi Warriors in the 2024/25 season opener, while last season’s champions, Rivers United, played out a 1-1 draw with Remo Stars in their own opening fixture, a pattern the champions will be eager to break.

A Rematch From Pre-Season

The two sides met just days earlier in the NPFL Super Six pre-season tournament in Jos, where Katsina United beat El-Kanemi Warriors before Rangers went on to win the overall tournament, edging Plateau United in the final. Katsina United will be looking to use that pre-season form to spring an opening day upset against the champions.
