Abakaliki FC head coach Starplus Izuikem Anistar has credited former Super Eagles defender Jude Agada with tightening the Nigeria National League club’s defence as part of a rebuild ahead of the 2026/27 season, Complete Sports reports.
Agada, who represented Nigeria between 1987 and 1990 and played for Rangers International and Udoji United during his career, joined Abakaliki FC as assistant coach alongside Idowu Anthony Paul, with both instantly integrated into preparations for the club’s promotion push.
Five Games, One Goal Conceded
Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing 2026 Tico/Select Preseason Tournament in Enugu, Anistar said the club had brought in Agada specifically to draw on his background as a defender, and that the results were already showing. He pointed to Abakaliki FC’s run to the tournament final, in which the team played five matches and conceded only a single goal, as evidence of the impact Agada has had on organising the backline.
The head coach said defenders were now reacting to threats with more confidence, joining attacking moves and recovering into position more effectively, improvements he attributed directly to Agada’s coaching. Abakaliki FC will face Nationwide League One side Flight FC of Gboko in Wednesday’s final, with Anistar expressing confidence about finishing the tournament with the title despite football, in his words, getting tougher rather than easier the further a team progresses in a competition.
A Rebuild With Promotion In Mind
The appointments of Agada and Idowu form part of a wider rebuild at Abakaliki FC as the club targets a return to the NPFL. Agada previously coached at River Lane Academy, SKB FC and Coal City FC before this move, while Idowu brings his own experience from spells at NEPA FC Lagos, Julius Berger FC Lagos and Ray Queens FC.
