Former Super Eagles defender Azubuike Egwuekwe has expressed confidence that Warri Wolves will produce positive results when the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season gets underway.
Egwuekwe, who serves as Coordinator of the Seasiders, said the signs are encouraging that the new season will be a bright one for the club. Speaking from his base in Warri, the 37 year old stressed that assembling a new set of players with discipline, character, determination and commitment is key to achieving the club’s objectives.
A Fresh Start After A Mid-Season Appointment
Egwuekwe explained that he was appointed Coordinator by Delta State Sports Commission chairman Hon. Onoriode Joshua Oborevwori after the 2025/26 season had already begun, but is confident of a stronger campaign now that preparations are starting from scratch. He praised the Commission’s decision to bring former Warri Wolves players into official roles at the club, noting that he intends to work alongside head coach Hassan Abd’Allah to rebuild the squad with young, talented and committed players. According to Egwuekwe, that recruitment process has already begun, with a pre-season camp set to follow shortly. He said his experience playing in the NPFL and abroad will complement the coaching crew’s programme and philosophy as the club looks to move forward. Assistant coach Austin Johnny and goalkeeper coach Abayomi Olorunda are among other former Warri Wolves players now occupying roles within the club.
A Decorated Career Now Serving The Club
Egwuekwe brings a distinguished playing career to his new role, having won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in South Africa before adding a CHAN bronze medal in 2014 and representing Nigeria at that year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Warri Wolves finished the 2025/26 NPFL season in 13th place with 49 points, and Egwuekwe will now be hoping his blueprint helps the club climb higher in the coming campaign.
