Former Super Falcons midfielder Gift Okunwa-Igunbor has backed Nigeria to comfortably progress from the group stage of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, declaring Zambia the only side capable of giving the Super Falcons a serious test on their way to an unprecedented 11th continental title.

While acknowledging the improvement of several African nations in recent years, Okunwa-Igunbor believes Nigeria still have too much quality, experience, and tournament pedigree to stumble in the opening round. She said Nigeria are clear favourites in the group, pointing to Zambia’s pool of experienced players competing in Europe and the United States as the main danger.

Zambia head into the tournament with one of the strongest squads on the continent, led by global stars Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, whose performances in the United States’ National Women’s Soccer League have elevated the Copper Queens into genuine title contenders.

Even so, the former Nigerian international believes the Super Falcons have the depth and quality to finish ahead of their rivals. She also expressed confidence in head coach Justine Madugu’s squad selections, dismissing concerns over the group and saying the players chosen have what it takes to defend Nigeria’s title if they stay focused throughout the tournament.

Nigeria head into the championship as Africa’s most successful women’s national team, with a record 10 WAFCON titles, but face growing pressure from emerging forces including South Africa, Morocco, and Zambia, all of whom have invested heavily in the women’s game over the past decade. The Super Falcons are also targeting qualification for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup, adding extra weight to a strong showing in Morocco.
