Maduka Okoye traded gloves for a grandstand seat at one of motorsport’s most storied venues over the weekend, stepping away from football duty to indulge a lifelong passion for Formula One.

The Udinese goalkeeper was a guest of tyre manufacturer Pirelli at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, where he was handed the honour of presenting the Pirelli Pole Position Award to Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli after the Italian driver topped qualifying.

Okoye, a self described Formula One enthusiast, described the moment as a “childhood dream unlocked” in a social media post reflecting on the weekend, thanking Pirelli for the experience.

The appearance comes at a moment when the 26 year old’s profile has been rising well beyond the football pitch. His following on Instagram has climbed from roughly 250,000 to more than 1.5 million in recent weeks, while his TikTok account has also crossed the one million mark, a surge that has coincided with Nigeria’s recent friendlies against Poland and Portugal.

On the pitch, Okoye’s stock has also been rising. He kept 10 clean sheets in Serie A last season and followed it with composed performances for the Super Eagles, form that has reportedly drawn enquiries from clubs in Germany, England, France, and Turkey, with Italian reports also linking Juventus to a potential move for a new goalkeeper this summer.

Despite the interest, Okoye has publicly played down any suggestion of an imminent exit from Udinese, saying he remains fully focused on the club while leaving transfer matters to his representatives. He is next expected to link up with Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad in September for Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where he will look to hold onto the No. 1 jersey.
