Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets suffered a 3-2 defeat to Tanzania on Sunday in their opening game at the 2026 China International Youth Football Tournament in Yinchuan.

Tanzania started the stronger of the two sides, going into the break 2-0 up on the back of first-half goals from Issa Chole and Hamisi Chenga. The Eaglets responded better after the restart, pulling a goal back following a spell of sustained pressure on the Tanzanian defence.

Just when Nigeria looked set to build on that momentum, Kassim Juma restored Tanzania’s two goal cushion with a well taken finish to make it 3-1. The Eaglets hit back again soon after to set up a nervy finish, but they could not find a leveller as Tanzania held on to take the points.

Coach Uwejamomere Eboboritse and his squad will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they face Australia in their second group game, still chasing their first win of the tournament.

A Tournament Building Toward September’s Qualifiers

The four nation invitational, running from July 5 to 11, is jointly hosted by the Chinese Football Association, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Administration of Sport and the Yinchuan Municipal People’s Government, with all matches staged at the Yinchuan Sports Centre Helanshan Stadium. Nigeria, China, Australia and Tanzania make up the four competing sides.

Eboboritse travelled with a 20 man squad, assisted by coaches Kalli Mohammed Kachalla and Abdullahi Isa. Notably, the majority of the group were drawn from last year’s FIFA Talent Development Scheme U15 programme, underlining the Nigeria Football Federation’s growing emphasis on structured grassroots pathways. The technical crew has indicated the squad remains open, with more players expected to be added after the China trip as competition for places intensifies.

Before departing for China, the Eaglets went through a solid run of preparatory matches in Abuja. They opened with a 4-1 win over Sporting Dreams, were then held to a goalless draw by P Sports FC, and rounded things off with a 5-0 thrashing of Unicorn FC of Kwara. Across those three games, Nigeria scored nine goals while conceding only once, before running into a sharper Tanzanian side in their tournament opener.

The China outing forms part of Nigeria’s build-up to the WAFU B U-17 Championship in September, which doubles as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, itself the continent’s route to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

There is also a symbolic thread running through this trip. The Golden Eaglets’ visit to China comes almost 41 years after Nduka Ugbade’s class of 1985 beat West Germany in Beijing to win Nigeria’s first FIFA U-16 World Championship, the tournament that would later become the U-17 World Cup.
