Emmanuel Fernandez Marks Rangers Debut with Goal, Eyes Super Eagles Future

Rangers have officially introduced Emmanuel Oluwasegun Opeyemi Fernandez, the 23 year old Nigerian-eligible centre-back, who celebrated his first Ibrox appearance by scoring in a cup match.

Fernandez signed for Rangers from League One side Peterborough United, agreeing to a four-year contract, a deal announced in July 2025. Standing at 1.94 m, he brings both a commanding physical presence and the ability to contribute on set-pieces.

His debut came in the Premier Sports Cup Round of 16 against Alloa Athletic, where he opened his competitive account with a header from a set piece, helping Rangers secure a 4–2 victory. After the match, Fernandez expressed his gratitude to manager Russell Martin for giving him the opportunity, saying the goal “meant a lot” given he had not played much prior.

Martin, meanwhile, praised Fernandez’s “huge amount of potential,” highlighting his leadership qualities and physical strength as key attributes for his development in Glasgow.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Fernandez is eligible to represent Nigeria at senior level, a possibility he’s reportedly open to exploring in the future. At Rangers, he dons the number 37 jersey a number he has said is meaningful, linked to his late brother.
