Legendary Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has dismissed rumours suggesting he plans to run for the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The speculation followed Tuesdayโs 1-1 draw between Nigeria and South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a result that left the Super Eagles six points behind Group C leaders with just two matches remaining. Calls for the resignation of the Ibrahim Gusau-led NFF board also circulated after the disappointing outcome.
Addressing the rumours, Okocha, currently in Kigali for the SPORTSBIZAFRICA conference, said:
โHello everyone, I just want to use this opportunity to say that the news and post that have been circulating is false. I have not said or spoken to anyone about Nigerian football or any interest in becoming NFF president. So, Iโm pleading with the people spreading false information to stop. I appreciate my people and understand the frustration weโre going through, but be rest assured that better days are ahead. Letโs keep believing. I know that it is not easy, but we are all in it together. God bless and please letโs stay strong.โ
The Super Eagles will return to action in October for matchdays 9 and 10 of their World Cup qualifying campaign against Lesotho and Benin Republic.

Okochaโs firm denial highlights the importance of separating fact from speculation in Nigerian football discourse. While the teamโs recent draw against South Africa has intensified scrutiny of the NFF and calls for leadership change, spreading unverified claims about potential candidates only adds unnecessary noise.
We believe that discussions about governance and accountability should be grounded in transparency, not conjecture. Okochaโs response reminds fans and media alike that even respected legends must be approached responsibly when discussing potential administrative roles.
We also see the broader lesson: Nigerian football requires informed debate, strategic thinking, and patience. Legends of the game can contribute in many ways, but meaningful change comes from careful planning and collective effort, not impulsive leadership shifts.
We hold firm to the view that while frustration is understandable, speculation about individuals only distracts from the real work neededโboth on the pitch and in the federation. The focus must remain on supporting the Super Eagles and ensuring the NFF operates efficiently.
