Super Eagles coach Fidelis Ilechukwu insists Nigeria remains firmly on course for 2026 World Cup qualification, despite a rocky start to CAF Group C. With just one win from four matches including draws with Lesotho and Zimbabwe and a loss to Benin concern has risen over the Eagles’ prospects. Yet, Ilechukwu remains optimistic.
Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C, just four points behind leaders South Africa and within reach of the crucial second-place spot needed for a playoff route. With six remaining fixtures home and away against Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and South Africa the coach believes there’s still a path forward.
Ilechukwu has urged Nigerians to stay united behind the team, calling for focus on upcoming vital matches, especially the 3 June clash in Uyo against Rwanda and a pivotal away game in South Africa.

We share Coach Ilechukwu’s determined optimism. Yes, the campaign has stumbled yet mathematically, this remains far from over. Six games offer six opportunities. We believe rallying around the team home and abroad can push Nigeria back into contention.
What must change now is clarity. Each match needs defined targets maximum points from home fixtures, an upset in South Africa, and exploitation of rivals’ slip-ups. Preparation has to be surgical tactical refinement, fitness, mental resilience. The discussion should move from “if” we qualify to “how” we ensure it happens.
