Spain appear to have edged ahead of Nigeria in the pursuit of Elche’s promising left-footed goalkeeper Owen Bosch Lopez, despite the teenager’s Nigerian eligibility through his parents.
Born in Valencia, Lopez has impressed with his performances for Elche’s youth teams and caught the attention of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, earning an invitation to a Spanish U17 training camp in December 2023. However, he is yet to make an official appearance for Spain, meaning Nigeria still has a window of opportunity to secure his international future.
The 18 year old previously honed his skills at Valencia’s youth academy and represented the Valencian U12 and U14 regional sides before joining Elche from Ciutat de Xàtiva in the summer of 2022.
Lopez made his professional debut in March 2025 during a Segunda Federación clash against Sant Andreu and has since been named in three senior matchday squads twice for the Copa del Rey and once for La Liga2 fixtures under head coach Eder Sarabia.

His potential was first widely recognised at the 2019 LaLiga Promises tournament, where he was highlighted as one of the standout talents. Now a key member of Elche’s Juvenil A squad, Lopez’s future hangs delicately between the two footballing nations vying for his commitment.
Editorial
We are once again reminded of the fierce global competition for football’s brightest young talents, as Owen Bosch Lopez’s case shows. Nigeria must act swiftly if they are serious about tapping into the wealth of diaspora talent available to them.
Lopez’s development at top Spanish academies places him among the elite crop of young goalkeepers, and his recent promotion to Elche’s senior squad shows that his career is ascending rapidly. We believe the Nigeria Football Federation cannot afford to be reactive they must be proactive and persuasive in securing players like Lopez before they become tied to other nations.
The pathway for young talents today is full of choices, and emotional as well as professional ties often dictate decisions. Nigeria must offer a clear vision for players like Lopez a vision that promises opportunity, growth, and the chance to be part of a national team destined for greatness.
We hope to see Lopez proudly wearing green and white in the near future. The race is not over yet, but only swift, strategic action will ensure Nigeria remains a serious contender for his services.
