Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has praised Nigerian-Swiss utility player Isaac Schmidt for his impressive versatility and professional attitude, despite limited playing time since arriving at the club last summer. The 25 year old joined Leeds from Swiss side St. Gallen on deadline day and signed a four year contract.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Leeds’ Championship clash against Preston North End, Farke acknowledged Schmidt’s difficult transition into English football but commended his work rate and positive mentality.
“What I like about Isaac is lots of competition… he needed to adapt, but the longer he’s been with us, the more he’s impressed,” Farke said.
Schmidt, born in Lausanne, is eligible to represent Nigeria through his mother and Germany through his father. While he has played for Switzerland in friendlies, his international future remains open. Despite being capable of playing in an astonishing eleven positions ranging from full back to striker he has made just nine substitute appearances in the Championship and two starts in the FA Cup.
With teammates like Junior Firpo, Jayden Bogle, and Sam Byram all excelling in their roles, Schmidt has found minutes hard to come by. However, Farke’s praise suggests the club sees long-term value in his development.

In a world where players specialise, Isaac Schmidt stands out not because he’s flashy or famous, but because he’s versatile to a rare degree. Eleven positions. Let that sink in. That kind of adaptability is gold dust in today’s game, especially for clubs chasing promotion like Leeds United.
Schmidt’s situation reminds us that football isn’t just about minutes on the pitch it’s about mentality. Yes, he hasn’t broken into the starting eleven yet, but Daniel Farke’s admiration isn’t hollow praise. It’s a nod to the kind of character every successful team needs behind the scenes: disciplined, patient, and ready.
Let’s also not forget his international potential. With Switzerland, Nigeria, and even Germany technically on the table, this is a player who could soon be the subject of an international tug of war. Nigeria, in particular, would do well to monitor him closely. A utility player who can fit in anywhere across the pitch is exactly the sort of depth the Super Eagles need heading into major tournaments.
We believe Schmidt’s moment will come. And when it does, he won’t just be a backup option he’ll be the blueprint for how to rise with quiet consistency in a world obsessed with instant results.
